The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has honoured Olanike Nafisat Balogun for making history as its first female pilot.

In a statement shared on December 8, 2024, NCS spokesperson Abdullahi Maiwada praised Balogun’s ambition and dedication to the Service.

Balogun began her NCS career in 2002 and steadily advanced her qualifications, earning an Advanced Diploma in Air Ticketing and Cabin Services, a Master’s in Public Administration from Ahmadu Bello University, and a Pilot Certification from the Flying Academy in Miami, Florida, all with the support of the NCS.

Now a Deputy Superintendent of Customs, Balogun is the first female pilot in the NCS Airwing, a role that has made her an inspiration for women within and beyond the Service.

Reflecting on her journey, she acknowledged the challenges she faced, particularly her decision to remain in public service when others chose more lucrative airline jobs.

“Staying in the Service was tough, but I was determined to contribute to public service and fulfill my dream of becoming a pilot,” Balogun said.

“I hope my journey will motivate young Nigerians, especially women, to chase their dreams and overcome barriers,” she added.

The Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, commended Balogun’s achievement, highlighting it as evidence of the Service’s commitment to fostering talent and innovation.

“Her story exemplifies what is possible with determination and institutional support,” he remarked.

Balogun’s groundbreaking accomplishment is being celebrated as a milestone for gender representation and professional excellence in the Nigeria Customs Service.
