Court Remands 10 Over Unlawful Possession of Firearms

Ibadan, Oct. 4, 2024 (TheGavel) – An Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan has remanded ten men in a correctional facility following allegations of unlawful possession of firearms.

The defendants, who range in age from 20 to 46 years, include Mufutau Hammed, 46; Monsuru Salami, 35; Ifalola Johnson, 30; Rauf Dauda, 30; Lukman Salami, 45; Nurudeen Hammed, 30; Rasak Alimi, 30; Nurudeen Sodiq, 30; Suleman Hassan, 27; and Hassan Abdulahi, 20.

They are facing a three-count charge that includes unlawful possession of firearms, assault, and breach of peace. During the proceedings, Magistrate Mrs. M. Olagbenro did not take the defendants’ pleas and instead ordered that the case file be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for further advice. The court has scheduled the next mention of the case for November 4.

The prosecution, represented by ASP Foluke Adedosu, informed the court that the alleged offenses occurred on September 28 in Iseyin, Oyo State. According to Adedosu, the police apprehended the defendants while they were in possession of three locally made barrel guns, two locally made Dane guns, and two live cartridges without lawful authority.

Additionally, Adedosu detailed an incident of assault involving the defendants, stating that they slapped two complainants, Mr. Abdulazeez Lukman and Mr. Oluwole Akinkunmi. The prosecutor argued that the defendants’ actions posed a threat to public peace, particularly by invading a farmland armed and engaging in assault against the complainants.

The charges against the defendants contravene Sections 6(b) and 3 of the Robbery and Firearms Laws of Nigeria, 2004. (NAN)
