Fubara Says LG Election Must Hold in Rivers
Port Harcourt, Oct. 4, 2024 (TheGavel) – Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has declared his commitment to ensuring the successful conduct of the local government council elections scheduled for Saturday. He emphasized that the elections would take place in compliance with a recent Supreme Court judgment, which he believes must be upheld without obstruction.
In a press briefing held in Port Harcourt on Friday, Fubara stated, “No court has the right to thwart a judgment of the nation’s apex court; we can only obey.” He underscored the significance of the upcoming elections as a means to establish governance at the third tier of government in Rivers State.
The governor called on law enforcement agencies, particularly the police, to provide their full support for the electoral process, asserting that similar elections are being conducted in other states across the country in adherence to the same Supreme Court ruling. “Other states are already conducting elections in compliance with the judgment and the understanding we reached with the president,” he noted.
Fubara expressed his concern over a security report he received earlier on Friday, which indicated that the office of the Rivers State Electoral Commission had been invaded by police personnel. “I was really surprised because I had previously received a signal withdrawing police officers from the premises,” he said.
To ensure the integrity of the electoral process, Fubara personally visited the commission’s office, where he encountered heavily armed police officers attempting to force their way inside. “This is not good; this is a legitimate process that every concerned organ of government should support,” he asserted.
In his closing remarks, Fubara urged the people of Rivers State to remain law-abiding and peaceful during the election, encouraging them not to be intimidated by any actions that may disrupt the electoral process. “I implore Rivers people to stand firm and participate in this legitimate democratic exercise,” he added.
