Aba Power PLC has suspended its efforts to restore electricity in Ukwa West due to persistent vandalism, which has continued to disrupt power infrastructure in the area.

Speaking during a media briefing, the company’s Head of Technical, Simeon Akpata, lamented that despite efforts to reconnect Ukwa West, vandals have repeatedly sabotaged the work, making it nearly impossible to sustain supply.

“As of last week, while we were installing conductors, vandals struck again—just within 70 spans, nearly a kilometer of power lines was stolen,” he revealed. “At this point, we had to stop the project because it makes no sense to continue if this is the reality.”

Akpata noted that Ukwa West has been without electricity since the era of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), and Aba Power PLC had been making efforts to resolve the situation. However, ongoing vandalism has frustrated the company’s attempts.

The situation in Ukwa West is part of a broader crisis, as Akpata described Aba as the “vandalism capital of Nigeria,” citing the destruction of over 73 transformers within Aba Township in the past year alone. He also mentioned a recent incident where an entire substation was vandalized, leaving many customers in total blackout.

Despite these setbacks, he assured residents that Aba Power PLC remains committed to improving power supply but urged stakeholders and security agencies to take urgent action to curb vandalism.
