60 bodies recovered and many others missing as boat carrying 300 passengers capsizes in Niger

No fewer than 60 bodies have been recovered after a boat carrying 300 passengers capsized in Niger State.

According to a release by the Press Secretary to the Council Chairman of Mokwa local government, Abubakar Dakani, the passenger boat capsized at the notorious Gbajibo River in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State on Tuesday, October 1, 2024.

Dakani said the boat was travelling from Mundi to Gbajibo for the Annual Maulud celebration when tragedy struck.

The release also confirmed that Council Chairman Abdullahi Muregi acknowledged the recovery of approximately 60 bodies, while 10 survivors have been found.

It added that rescue efforts in collaboration with the State emergency management agency and locals are ongoing to recover others who are missing.

In September, at least 40 people drowned after their boat capsized on a river in Zamfara

The wooden boat was ferrying more than 50 farmers to their fields across the river near Gummi town in Zamfara state when it capsized.

It was gathered that more than 900 farmers rely on crossing the river in the region daily to access their farmlands. But only two boats are available, often leading to overcrowding
