Zuma Film Festival 2024: Redefining African cinema through innovation, collaboration
The Zuma International Film Festival 2024 concluded with an extraordinary celebration of African cinematic creativity and innovation. Held from December 1st to 5th across venues including the Jabi Lake Mall, Chida Event Centre, and the State House, the festival showcased a remarkable blend of emerging talent, industry expertise, and forward-thinking discourse.
The festival commenced with the “Zuma Light Up Night” at Jabi Lake Mall, a vibrant opening ceremony that set the tone for a week of film excellence and cultural celebration. The “Emerging Talents” segment, spearheaded by Nora Awolowo, offered workshops and demonstrations, including a presentation by Canon on its latest technology. Participants were inspired by valuable insights into branding and career development in film, with special sessions led by industry veterans like Uncle Sam. Michael Auret’s masterclass on film financing and market strategies attracted filmmakers eager to navigate the intricacies of funding and distribution. Through screenings and discussions, attendees gained practical knowledge to advance their projects from script to screen.

The NFC Annual Lecture, delivered by Nigeria’s Vice President Kashim Shettima (represented by Barr. Hannah Musa Musawa), explored the theme “Cinematic Ecosystems: Redefining African Cinema.” It addressed challenges in the industry and proposed solutions to enhance the digital positioning of African cinema. The festival delved into the intersection of technology and filmmaking with sessions like “Beyond Reality: Exploring AI and the Metaverse in Film,” presented by Malik Afegua. Participants witnessed firsthand the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in film production.
The “Women in Film Forum,” moderated by Halima Oyelade, spotlighted female pioneers in the industry, including Ronyan Man, Juliet Ibrahim, and Almudena Vázquez. These “Digital Divas” shared their experiences and encouraged greater inclusion of women in cinematic roles, especially with AI’s rising prominence. The grand finale on December 5 celebrated cinematic excellence with the Zuma Awards Night. Distinguished guests, filmmakers, and enthusiasts gathered at the Chida Event Centre to honor outstanding achievements in African film.
