VIDEO: Dele Farotimi breaks silence after release from detention

Dele Farotimi, an activist lawyer and author, has reaffirmed his allegations against Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Afe Babalola, declaring his commitment to truth after his release from detention.

Speaking to journalists on Tuesday in Ado-Ekiti, Farotimi said, “I have never lied against anyone. If I don’t know, I will say I don’t know. The truth is enough—it is the only weapon with which you can slay the monster called Nigeria.”

Farotimi had been detained at the Ekiti State Correctional Centre following allegations of defamation.

His controversial book Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System outlines his claims that Babalola engaged in unethical practices. Farotimi insists these assertions are factual.

“I understand the challenges that come with fighting entrenched powers, but I remain steadfast in my commitment to the truth,” he added.

On December 20, an Ado-Ekiti magistrate court granted Farotimi bail after he fulfilled conditions, including a ₦30 million bond, two sureties—one a property owner—and the surrender of his passport.

He is also prohibited from granting media interviews. His arrest has sparked debate about freedom of expression and the power dynamics within Nigeria’s legal system.

Farotimi’s statements have set the stage for a legal battle, with observers closely monitoring the case.
