Ugbor calls for commission of inquiry into killings in Benue

The Member, House of Representatives for Kwande/Ushongo Federal Constituency, Hon Terseer Ugbor, has urged the federal and state governments to set up a commission of inquiry into the killings in Benue.

He called on them to thoroughly investigate and proffer lasting solutions to the ongoing killings.

Ugbor expressed total condemnation of the tragic killings, particularly the increasing insecurity in the Turan/Ikyurav-Ya axis of his constituency.

The lawmaker bemoaned the frequency of the attacks, which have contributed to the growing number of displaced people in the state, resulting in a higher poverty index and poor quality of life for the people.

He pointed out the detrimental impact on agriculture, the primary means of sustenance for these communities, which has led to unprecedented hardship among the affected populace and contributed to food shortages in Nigeria.

Ugbor further stated that he visited the affected communities during the Yuletide break to assess the situation and deliver relief palliatives, and from the information gathered, he emphasized that the attacks appear to be increasingly systematic and have escalated, creating an urgent need for immediate action. Otherwise, Turan/Ikyurav-Ya risks being entirely displaced from its ancestral lands.

The Honourable Member expressed his deep sorrow and extended his condolences to those who have suffered losses. He implored the State and Local Governments to intensify their efforts to resist the invaders.

He pledged to exert every effort within his power as a legislator to ensure that peace and normalcy return to every part of his constituency.

He reiterated that the Federal and State Governments must fulfill their primary obligation to protect lives and property or fail the people who have overwhelmingly entrusted them with the mandate to govern.

Ugbor thanked the Inspector General of Police for approving a new border patrol unit in Kwande and reassured that he was making arrangements to activate the unit as a layer of security for the border communities.
