Sheikh Gumi shares his perspective on Tinubu’s tax reform bills

Islamic scholar and preacher Sheikh Ahmad Abubakar Gumi has voiced his support for the contentious Tax Reform Bills, describing them as beneficial for all Nigerians despite opposition from northern leaders.

According to reports, the reforms have faced strong criticism from northern governors, lawmakers, and traditional rulers, who warn that implementing the bills could exacerbate economic difficulties in the region.

This division has added to the growing tensions between stakeholders in the North and South. The bills, which passed their second reading in the Senate last Thursday, have sparked intense nationwide debates.

In an interview with the Daily Post on Tuesday, Gumi expressed optimism about the overall potential of the tax reform package but emphasized the need to review the Value Added Tax (VAT) segment, which has been the focal point of controversy.

“I believe the contentious VAT issue is the only part that needs to be reviewed; otherwise, it is a good package for all,” Gumi said when asked for his perspective on the controversy.

Meanwhile, the Presidency has clarified that the bill is not designed to disproportionately favor Lagos and Rivers States, as some have claimed. Instead, it aims to improve the overall quality of life for Nigerians.
