Serie A: The Race for the Scudetto heats up already

Although Inter may have lost against Milan in the latest derby della Madonnina, many Italian pundits believe the Nerazzurri remain favourites for the Serie A title.

Simone Inzaghi’s Inter must defend the Serie A title they won last season when they put their hands on their 20th Scudetto with five games to spare after beating Milan on April 22.

The Rossoneri took revenge a few months later when, in September 2024, they beat the Nerazzurri, ending a six-game losing streak.

Several pundits still see Inter as the leading candidate to win the title this season and this could be a valuable tip for fans placing bets on fast withdrawal betting sites.

However, they’d better remember that the last four Serie A winners failed to defend their title in the following season. After Juventus won their ninth consecutive Scudetto in 2019-20, there was a considerable turnover in the summit of Italian football, with Inter, Milan, Napoli—and then again Inter—claiming the Tricolor.

“Inter remain the best team in the league despite the defeat in the derby. They are still the favourite for the title,” Inter and Italy legend Marco Materazzi recently said.

“In the last few years, nobody has been able to defend the title, and this means that the denigrated Italian league is still the best in the world. Manchester City have won the Premier League title for four years in a row. PSG dominate in France and championship titles are split between Real Madrid and Barcelona in Spain. On the other hand, we have great balance and competition in Italy. That’s why the following season is always more difficult.”

Naples, Juventus, Milan, Romaand Atalanta are all among the title contenders in 2024-25. Since the start of the season, Juventus coach Thiago Motta and director Cristiano Giuntoli have tried to put pressure on the Nerazzurri and Napoli.

“It’s still early, but Inter and Napoli are favourites. History says so,” Giuntoli said in his latest interview.

“The most experienced team always wins. Inter are as such, and Napoli became so following their change of strategy.”

The Partenopei reacted strongly after opening the Serie A campaign with an away 3-0 loss at Hellas Verona. Antonio Conte’s side won three games in a row before holding Juventus to a 0-0 stalemate in Week 5.

Milan, on the other hand, had a pretty poor start but boosted their confidence with a key win in the derby, which also helped Paulo Fonseca keep his job.

Roma and Atalanta have been in more trouble. The Giallorossi already replaced Daniele De Rossi with Ivan Juric, while La Dea lost three games from the opening five. Nevertheless, the season has just started, and history tells us that the race for the Serie A title will be as unpredictable as ever despite predictions.
