Reps Deputy Speaker Urges FG to Align National Development with AU Agenda 2063

Abuja, Sept. 30, 2024(TheGavel) – Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has called on the Federal Government to align Nigeria’s development strategy with the African Union’s Agenda 2063, a comprehensive blueprint aimed at transforming Africa into a global powerhouse by the year 2063.

Kalu made this appeal in a communique issued in Abuja on Monday following his return from leading Nigeria’s delegation to the Conference of Speakers of African Parliaments held in Midrand, South Africa. The conference brought together parliamentary leaders from across the continent to discuss Africa’s future, with a focus on the AU’s long-term development goals.

By integrating AU Agenda 2063 into its national policies, Kalu believes Nigeria would not only set an example for other African nations but also drive the continent’s collective progress. He emphasized that Nigeria’s development aspirations closely align with Africa’s broader growth initiatives under Agenda 2063.

The African Union’s Agenda 2063 is a visionary framework designed to transform Africa into a prosperous and peaceful continent, fully integrated and driven by its people, while playing a major role on the global stage. The agenda includes seven core aspirations, focusing on areas such as economic growth, social inclusion, sustainable development, and good governance.

Kalu highlighted that key policy initiatives under President Bola Tinubu’s administration resonate with the goals of AU Agenda 2063, particularly in areas like youth empowerment, economic diversification, and governance reforms.

“As Africa’s most populous nation and largest economy, Nigeria holds a unique position on the continent,” Kalu noted, stressing the importance of Nigeria’s leadership role in driving the continent’s development.

Despite the challenges Nigeria faces—such as economic volatility, infrastructural deficits, and social inequalities—Kalu expressed optimism about the country’s future. He pointed to ongoing efforts by President Tinubu’s government to diversify the economy away from oil dependency by investing in sectors like agriculture, technology, and renewable energy.

“By embarking on economic diversification, Nigeria aims to foster sustainable economic growth that reflects the aspirations of Agenda 2063,” Kalu added.

The Deputy Speaker reiterated that aligning with the AU’s strategic goals would not only strengthen Nigeria’s development trajectory but also contribute significantly to Africa’s overall progress. The call to action reinforces Nigeria’s role as a continental leader committed to advancing Africa’s vision for the future. (NAN)
