Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has issued a statement clarifying remarks he made following his side’s dramatic 3-3 Champions League draw against Feyenoord.

Guardiola, who appeared with visible scratches on his face during post-match duties, had jokingly attributed the marks to “wanting to harm myself” after City squandered a 3-0 lead.

The comment sparked reactions, prompting Guardiola to address the matter on social media.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Guardiola stated: “I was caught off guard with a question at the end of a press conference last night about a scratch on my face and explained that a sharp fingernail had accidentally caused this.

My answer was in no way intended to make light of the very serious issue of self-harm.

“I know many people struggle with mental health daily, and I’d like to highlight that help is available through resources like the Samaritans hotline (116 123) or via email at jo@samaritans.org.”

City’s draw marked a continuation of their winless streak, now at six games across all competitions.

Despite Erling Haaland’s brace and İlkay Gündoğan’s strike giving City a commanding lead, defensive lapses allowed Feyenoord to net three goals in the final 15 minutes, including a late equalizer by Dávid Hancko.

The reigning champions have in hand, a vital Premier League clash against leaders Liverpool on Saturday.

If City lose the clash at Anfield, the Reds will extend their lead over City to 11 points, intensifying the pressure on Guardiola.
