Nigeria revived their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification hopes with a 2-0 away victory over Rwanda on Friday evening in Kigali.

Victor Osimhen, who has netted 26 goals for his club, Galatasaray, in the 2024/2025 season, scored both goals in the first half.

He scored the first in the 11th minute. As Rwanda pushed for an equalizer, the Galatasaray forward struck again, doubling Nigeria’s lead and cementing their control of the match.

With the goals, Osimhen has surpassed legendary striker Segun Odegbami’s record and moved to the second spot with 25 goals in Nigeria’s chart, and he is now chasing the late Rashidi Yekini’s record of 37 goals.

The victory of the Super Eagles marks a winning start for the new manager of the Super Eagles, Eric Chelle.

The formation adopted by Chelle: 1-4-4-2, allowed the Super Eagles of Nigeria enough room to attack and peg the Amavubi (The Wasps) of Rwanda.

The Rwandan national team and the Super Eagles had ended their last two matches in Kigali in draws.
