Ogun Youths Shun Planned Protest, Say Police, NSCDC Officials
Abeokuta, Oct. 1, 2024 (TheGavel) – The Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Mr. Abiodun Alamutu, has confirmed that the planned protest, #FearlessOctober1, did not take place in Abeokuta or other parts of the state as initially feared. Speaking with reporters on Tuesday, Alamutu attributed the peaceful atmosphere to the decision of youths in the state to shun the protest.
Alamutu provided an update on the situation, emphasizing that calm prevailed across Ogun State, following a series of meetings with key stakeholders aimed at preventing any unrest. He noted that these consultations, held on Sunday, were instrumental in maintaining peace and ensuring that the planned protest did not escalate into a disruptive event.
“A meeting was held on Sunday with critical stakeholders to ensure that no protest was held in the state. Presently, there is palpable calm in the state because, at the general stakeholders meeting, we consulted with all critical stakeholders. We told them to speak with their wards to shun any violent demonstrations,” the police commissioner said.
Alamutu commended the efforts of the stakeholders in discouraging any form of violence, noting that, so far, there has been no sign of protest or violence in the state. However, he assured the public that law enforcement agencies remained on alert, monitoring the situation to prevent any potential disruptions.
“Protest is a fundamental right. What we have objection to is a situation where some people will hijack a peaceful protest to cause unnecessary crisis in the state,” he added.
Similarly, the State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Ogun, David Ojelabi, confirmed that no protests had occurred in the state. Ojelabi, however, stressed the importance of maintaining vigilance and indicated that security personnel from the NSCDC and other agencies would remain on standby in case of any unforeseen incidents.
“Well, as far as Ogun is concerned, I have not seen any protest anywhere. We had a meeting with the stakeholders, and they kept to their words. Nevertheless, we have to be alert, and that is why our men, including those of other security agencies, are on the ground,” Ojelabi said.
He further expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, encouraging citizens to remain prayerful and hardworking, as he believes these virtues will lead the country toward greatness.
Security agencies in the state continue to monitor the situation closely, ensuring peace and order across Ogun despite the initial concerns surrounding the planned #FearlessOctober1 protest. (NAN)
