Nigerian parties focus solely on power, unlike Ghana – Okhai

GistReel

Victor Okhai, a global affairs analyst, has criticized Nigerian political parties for lacking ideologies to guide their actions and beliefs.

He described them as Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) created solely to acquire power, contrasting this with Ghana and other nations where parties are grounded in ideologies.

Speaking during an interview with Arise News on Monday, Okhai said, In Nigeria, political parties are nothing but SPVs, Special Purpose Vehicles for acquiring power. So the issue of ideology is out the window. It is what it is. We have to face the fact that unfortunately that’s what the situation is in Nigeria here. But the Ghanaians, not just in Ghana but across the globe, parties are ideologically based. People stay in them and grow in them. But the case is different here. Integrity is our biggest problem here.”

Discussing Ghana’s 2024 presidential election, Okhai noted that Ghanaians, particularly the youth, were dissatisfied with the incumbent administration and voted decisively for change.

“This election belonged to Ghana’s young people,” he said. “They were fed up and demanded change, delivering a clear vote of no confidence in the government. The electoral process respected their decision, marking a victory for democracy.”
