Nigeria at 64: Governor Yusuf Emphasizes the Need for Inclusive Development

Kano, Nigeria(TheGavel) – In a recent address, Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State underscored the critical link between the nation’s future and the imperative for inclusive development across all states of the federation. Speaking at an independence anniversary lecture organized by the Kano State Government, Yusuf articulated that a brighter future for Kano could serve as a microcosm of Nigeria’s broader aspirations for prosperity. The lecture, themed “Nigeria’s Independence and Leadership Challenges: Repositioning Kano for a Greater Future,” took place in the lead-up to Nigeria’s 64th independence celebration from Great Britain on October 1.

Represented by the state Commissioner for Information, Mr. Baba Dantiye, Yusuf emphasized that addressing state-level challenges in leadership, education, health, and infrastructure is essential for achieving national success. “This topic emphasizes the importance of localized governance as a stepping stone to national success,” he noted. “Repositioning Kano State for a brighter future links into the idea that Independence Day is not just about reflecting on the past, but also about looking ahead.”

He further highlighted the necessity of fostering a sustainable and progressive state where good governance, rule of law, and inclusivity are prioritized. “As we commemorate 64 years of independence, it is vital to appreciate how far we have come, but more importantly, to chart a course for the future,” Yusuf asserted.

Yusuf also pointed out that the effectiveness of democracy is largely contingent upon the quality of leadership at all levels. He reassured attendees of the Kano State Government’s commitment to strengthening the democratic process and establishing institutions that promote good governance and development.

In his lecture, Professor Kamilu Fagge of Bayero University Kano (BUK) echoed Governor Yusuf’s sentiments, stating that the extent to which any state could be effectively repositioned is largely dependent on transformational leadership. “Given their vantage position of power and authority, the leadership must spearhead the move for repositioning the state to its glorious past,” Fagge emphasized. He called for leaders to develop the political will necessary to drive the state forward, advocating for a self-cleansing approach where leaders not only embrace the ethos, ethics, and values of leadership but also take concrete steps to eradicate social ills such as corruption, maladministration, abuse of office, and cronyism.

As Nigeria prepares to celebrate its 64th anniversary of independence, the discussions led by Governor Yusuf and Professor Fagge serve as a poignant reminder of the work that remains to be done in fostering inclusive development and effective governance. (NAN)
