Neymar Junior’s return to international football has been delayed, as the Santos forward has been withdrawn from Brazil’s squad for their upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers due to a thigh injury.

The 33-year-old was a surprise inclusion in Dorival Junior’s squad earlier this month, but Globo reports that he is not physically fit enough to feature.

The player has also released a statement on the development, he wrote:

“The return seemed so close but unfortunately I won’t be able to return to wearing the heaviest shirt in the world in this moment!.

“We had long conversations and everyone knows the great desire I have to return but we came to a consensus and decided not to risk it for me to better prepare myself and be completely injury free!

“Thank you to those who sent me messages of support.

“It’s part of the process,” he added.

Meanwhile, Neymar has impressed since rejoining Santos from Al-Hilal, scoring three goals and providing three assists in seven appearances.

However, his comeback to the Seleção will have to wait.

Alongside Neymar, Flamengo right-back Danilo and Manchester City goalkeeper Éderson have also pulled out.

Real Madrid’s Endrick, Flamengo’s Alex Sandro, and Lyon’s Lucas Perri have been called up as replacements.

Brazil will face Colombia on March 21 and Argentina on March 26, with Dorival Junior aiming to strengthen their qualification campaign without one of the nation’s all-time greats.
