Neither herders nor farmers face exploitation in Jigawa – Gov Namadi
Governor Umar Namadi has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring a peaceful coexistence between farmers and herders in Jigawa State.
He emphasized that structured mediation and development initiatives have prevented exploitation on both sides.
During his visit to the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development in Abuja, Governor Namadi highlighted the success of Jigawa’s Farmers and Herdsmen Board in mitigating conflicts and fostering agricultural stability.
“We have established a Farmers and Herdsmen Board to mediate between farmers and herders, ensuring a harmonious relationship. These two groups need to work together for the betterment of the agricultural sector. I am pleased to report that this board is functioning effectively, ensuring that neither herders nor farmers face any exploitation,” he stated.
Namadi further outlined Jigawa State’s commitment to livestock development.
He cited infrastructure investments such as the Maigatari livestock market and the expansion of grazing reserves.
“The government is very serious about this, and as of today, we have about 54 gazetted grazing reserves, with nearly 60 to 70 reserves on the ground. Most of these reserves have water points, and we have worked to ensure their protection for both farmers and herders. This has significantly improved the relationship between the two groups,” he explained.
In response, Minister of Livestock Development, Alhaji Idi Mukhtar Maiha, praised Jigawa’s proactive measures, noting that the state’s approach should serve as a model for others.
“Jigawa’s approach to livestock development and conflict resolution is commendable. The proactive steps taken by Governor Namadi’s administration should be emulated by other states,” the minister stated.
