‘Don’t join October 1 protest’, Police warn Ondo residents
The Ondo State Police Command has warned the residents of the state not to partake in the nationwide protest for October 1, Nigeria’s Independence Day.
The warning came after organisers of the protest, led by Omoyele Sowore, insisted they would go ahead with their demonstration on the streets.
Daily Trust learnt that the nationwide protest tagged #FearlessInOctober was to bring the attention of the Nigerian government to the current economic hardship facing the people.
But in a statement issued by the police spokesperson in the state, Funmilayo Odunlami, to journalists on Monday, the commissioner of police, Abayomi Oladipo, said it had deployed its men to the town to ensure no protest is used in truncating the celebration of the Independence Day.

“The CP urges the good people of the state to continue to be patriotic and not join any organisation or group that may want to disrupt the historical celebration of our dear nation.
“In view of the celebration, the Commissioner of Police has ordered that all security apparatus of the Police be activated to ensure the celebration is hitch free and no untoward incident is recorded,” the statement read.
While wishing the good people of the state a happy Independence, Oladipo also urged parents and guardians to warn their children/wards not to partake in any activity that could lead to the break down of law and order in the state.
He added that the police command is also committed to the protection of lives and property of all citizens as security apparatuses had been activated to apprehend anyone who transgressed the law during the course of the celebration.
