LG election: 11 parties sign peace accord in Plateau
Ahead of the October 9 local government election in Plateau State, 11 political parties have signed a peace agreement to ensure a violence-free and fair electoral process.
The peace accord was organised by the Plateau State Peace Building Agency (PPBA) in collaboration with the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC).
The PPBA Director General, Julie Sanda while speaking at the event, said the objective of the peace pact was to ensure that political parties and their supporters conduct themselves peacefully before, during and after the election.
She said, “This platform provides our commitment to peace and principles of democracy. The Plateau State Peace Building Agency (PPBA) in collaboration with the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) as well as other stakeholders remain committed to implementing proactive measures in preventing violence at every state of the electoral process in the state. This includes, promoting peace, facilitating dialogue and ensure the process is transparent.”

Speaking at the event, Governor Caleb Mutfwang, represented by his deputy, Josephine Piyo, assured that “the council elections will be the best in the country.”
“We will make sure that every vote counts. I believe that this peace exercise with further deepen our efforts to ensure peace in the state,” he added.
Also speaking, the PLASIEC chairman, Plangji Cishak, called on supporters of all political parties to adhere to the rule of law, and eschew violence before, during and after the exercise.
