Kaduna Woman Arraigned for Alleged N4.8 Million Flour Fraud

Kaduna, Oct. 2, 2024 (TheGavel) – A 45-year-old woman, Chidima Chijioke, has been arraigned before a Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday for allegedly defrauding another woman of bags of flour valued at N4.8 million.

Chijioke, who resides in Ungwan Rimi, Kaduna, faces a three-count charge of conspiracy, stealing, and obtaining money under false pretence. However, she pleaded not guilty to the charges.

According to the Police Prosecutor, Inspector Chidi Leo, the alleged offence occurred in 2023. Leo told the court that Chijioke fraudulently obtained several bags of flour, which belonged to one Francisca Raymond, under the guise of paying for them in installments. Despite her promise, Chijioke allegedly failed to fulfill the agreement, and a cheque issued to Raymond bounced due to insufficient funds.

“Efforts made by the complainant to retrieve either the goods or the money proved abortive,” Leo explained.

The prosecutor noted that the offences violate Sections 287, 314, and 411 of the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017. These sections cover penalties for theft, obtaining by false pretences, and conspiracy, which carry potential sentences of 3 years, 15 years, and 2 years imprisonment, respectively.

The presiding Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000, with two sureties of like sum. He stipulated that the sureties must be gainfully employed and provide evidence of two years of tax payment to the Kaduna State Government.

The case has been adjourned until November 21 for further hearing.(NAN)
