In a significant decision aimed at upholding the integrity of Nigeria’s higher education system, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the dissolution of the Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State. This action includes the removal of Professor Bernard Ifeanyi Odoh, the recently appointed Vice Chancellor, and Mrs. Rosemary Ifoema Nwokike, the university’s registrar.

The Council, chaired by Ambassador Greg Ozumba Mbadiwe, included members Hafiz Oladejo, Augustine Onyedebelu, Engineer Amioleran Osahon, and retired General Funsho Oyeneyin. The dissolution was prompted by findings that the Council acted outside of its jurisdiction by appointing an unqualified Vice Chancellor without adhering to established procedures.

In addition to the changes at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, President Tinubu has also removed Engr. Ohieku Muhammed Salami from his position as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Federal University of Health Sciences in Otukpo, Benue State. This dismissal was necessitated by Salami’s unauthorized suspension of the Vice-Chancellor, a decision made without following the correct protocols. Despite a directive from the Federal Ministry of Education to revoke the suspension, Salami reportedly displayed insubordination, resorting to abusive conduct towards officials, including the Permanent Secretary.

The Federal Government stresses that university councils are tasked with the responsibility of ensuring the uninterrupted and efficient functioning of academic institutions in compliance with legislative mandates. President Tinubu has sent a strong message to these councils, urging them to prioritize their core functions and avoid actions that could disrupt the educational environment.
