Hardship: Kaduna youths beg residents to shun October 1 protest

Groups under the Coalition of Concerned Citizens of Kaduna have called on residents to shun the proposed October 1 nationwide protest against the economic hardship in the country.

According to the group, the recently conducted #EndBadGovernance protests caused destruction and loss of lives in some states.

Comrade Yusuf Lawal, the spokesperson for the organisation, made the appeal at a press briefing in Kaduna on Monday, urging the residents to engage in constructive dialogue instead of destructive protests.

The group acknowledged that the current government was not without its shortcomings, but emphasized the importance of allowing it the necessary time to fulfill its promises.

“The recent protests, particularly the ‘End Bad Governance’ demonstrations, led to significant vandalism and tragic loss of lives, including the heartbreaking death of a young man from Zaria. The economic repercussions for businesses and communities have been severe, diverting essential resources that could otherwise have been invested in development and social services.

“October 1st should serve as a day of celebration, honouring the sacrifices and contributions of our past heroes. It’s a day to reflect on our collective journey as a state and a nation, not one marked by the destruction of government and private property or civil unrest,” he stated.

Lawal encouraged Kaduna residents to go about their normal businesses instead of participating in a protest that could lead to chaos and violence.

He added that the group was particularly disheartened by the involvement of children in protests.

He said responsible parenting is crucial, saying the safety and well-being of children must always take precedence over political expression.

He also argued that protests often failed to resolve the systemic challenges facing Nigeria, whereas constructive dialogue, community engagement, and collaboration with the government had proven to be more effective in addressing citizens’ concerns and fostering lasting change.
