Gov. Diri Pledges 1,000 Housing Units in 8 LGAs, Tackles Water Supply in Bayelsa

Yenagoa, Oct. 1, 2024 (TheGavel) – Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has announced plans to construct over 1,000 affordable housing units across all eight local government areas of the state. In addition, he promised to provide pipe-borne water in Yenagoa, the state capital, and its surrounding areas during his second term in office.

Governor Diri made this commitment during a state broadcast on Tuesday to mark Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary and the 28th anniversary of Bayelsa’s creation. Reflecting on the achievements of his first term and outlining his vision for the future, the governor emphasized his administration’s dedication to improving the quality of life for Bayelsa citizens through accessible education, reliable healthcare, and economic development opportunities.

Expressing gratitude to the people of Bayelsa for their overwhelming support in re-electing him and his deputy, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, Diri reassured the public of his commitment to addressing key challenges in the state, including environmental issues such as soot pollution, flooding, and oil spills.

“We are filled with renewed optimism and a steadfast commitment to building a new Bayelsa. A Bayelsa where every citizen has access to quality education, healthcare is affordable and reliable, economic opportunities abound, jobs are plentiful, businesses flourish, and communities are empowered to achieve financial security and well-being,” Diri said during the broadcast.

The governor highlighted significant progress made during his first term, particularly in areas such as peace and security, education, healthcare, road infrastructure, human capacity development, and sports. He acknowledged that these achievements were the result of unity, cooperation, and a shared vision for development.

Diri also detailed several major projects currently underway as part of his administration’s urban renewal agenda. These include the construction of a state secretariat to give Yenagoa a facelift, along with other projects such as Glory Drive Phase 3, new legislature and commissioners’ quarters, affordable housing estates, and a modern stadium.

Other flagship initiatives include the development of an independent power plant, as well as the provision of pipe-borne water to Yenagoa and surrounding communities. The governor also underscored the ongoing construction of key road projects, such as the Onuebum-Otuoke Road, Akaba-Okodi Road, Oxbow Lake-Agbura Road, and the Toru-Ebeni-Okumbiri-Kabeama-Bolou-Orua Road.

Diri praised past administrations for laying the groundwork for Bayelsa’s development and emphasized that the state had made substantial progress since its creation on Oct. 1, 1996. He attributed the state’s achievements to the resilience, determination, and faith of the people, noting that their support had been pivotal in driving his administration’s Prosperity Government agenda.

In closing, the governor called for continued unity among the people, quoting a line from Nigeria’s national anthem: “Though tribe and tongue may differ, in brotherhood we stand.” He also extended congratulations to President Bola Tinubu and Nigerians across the country, as well as to the people of Bayelsa, on the occasion of the dual anniversaries.

“Today, we celebrate two momentous milestones: Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary and Bayelsa’s 28th statehood anniversary. On behalf of the Bayelsa State government and people, I offer profound congratulations to President Bola Tinubu and all Nigerians.
