Gombe government set to implement disability bill

The Gombe State government has finalized plans to implement a bill aimed at safeguarding the rights and welfare of persons living with disabilities (PLWDs).

Hon. Asma’u Mohammad Iganus, the state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, disclosed this on Tuesday during a sensitization rally in Yalmatu-Deba Local Government Area, held to commemorate World Disability Day.

Iganus pointed out the administration’s commitment to advancing inclusivity by drafting the disability bill and forwarding it to the Gombe State House of Assembly for approval.

Once enacted, the law will provide a legal framework to protect and promote the rights of PLWDs in the state.

“The government remains resolute in its efforts to involve persons living with disabilities in its administration and programs,” she said.

The commissioner stated that the government is determined to ensure no one is left behind in its development agenda, reiterating that the proposed law reflects Gombe State’s commitment to inclusivity and social justice, aligning with global standards for disability rights.

The rally brought together stakeholders and advocacy groups, who lauded the government’s initiative and urged speedy passage and implementation of the bill to address the challenges faced by PLWDs in the state.

If approved, the disability bill is expected to enhance accessibility, eliminate discrimination, and improve access to education, healthcare, and employment opportunities for PLWDs, fostering a more inclusive society in Gombe State.
