Davido warns African Americans against relocating to Africa, cites hardship
Nigerian music icon Davido has cautioned African Americans considering relocating to Africa, citing economic difficulties and systemic challenges.
Speaking during an interview on the Big Homies House podcast, the Afrobeats superstar shared his concerns about the growing interest among Black Americans in moving to the continent.
Davido emphasized that while Africa has its charm, the current economic realities make it a less favourable option for relocation.
Citing Nigeria as an example, he remarked, “It’s not cool back home. The economy now is in shambles.”
The singer pointed out the struggles faced by Nigerians, highlighting the paradox of locals paying exorbitant prices for domestically produced oil compared to those importing it. This, he said, exemplifies the systemic inefficiencies affecting everyday life in Africa.
“We Nigerians, the exchange rate is messed up, the oil prices is too high. Imagine a country producing oil and we are paying more for oil than countries importing it. We do not have the best leaders, and that is a fact,” he added.
However, Davido clarified that his remarks were not an attempt to discredit Africa. Instead, he aimed to paint a balanced picture, acknowledging the continent’s growing global appeal due to its thriving entertainment industry, which he described as a “smokescreen” masking deeper issues.
“My aim is to show off the little parts and leave the slums out of the frame,” he explained.
Davido’s comments have sparked mixed reactions online, with some praising his honesty and others questioning whether his message might deter potential investors or diaspora connections.
The Timeless crooner is renowned for his pride in African heritage and culture, often using his platform to showcase the continent’s vibrancy while advocating for progress and reform.
