Boat Mishap: Kogi, Niger waterways becoming increasingly perilous – Sen Echocho
Senator Jibrin Isah Echocho of Kogi East has lamented that the Kogi and Niger waterways are very perilous, urging relevant authorities to implement safety measures to prevent further tragedies.
Echocho made the remark while consoling the Kogi State government and families impacted by the tragic capsize of boats on the River Niger.
The incident, which involved approximately 200 market women, occurred as they were travelling from Kogi State to Niger State.
Authorities are still investigating the exact cause of the accident but it has already raised concerns about the safety of waterway transportation in the region.
The National Inland Waterways Authority confirmed that the boat sank along the Dambo-Ebuchi section of the River Niger, a route frequently used for commercial transportation between Kogi and Niger States.
However, Echocho conveyed his deepest sympathies to the victims’ families, urging them to find strength in the face of such an overwhelming tragedy.
In a statement he signed, the senator also offered prayers for the souls of the departed, seeking eternal rest for those who lost their lives in the accident.
Senator Echocho highlighted the growing dangers of the waterway, noting that accidents on the route have become increasingly frequent.
He said: “The waterway connecting Kogi and Niger states has become increasingly perilous, and it is crucial that relevant authorities take immediate action to implement stronger safety measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.”
Echocho called on the government to prioritize the safety of people who rely on water transport as a primary mode of travel. He emphasized the need for better regulation, improved infrastructure, and the enforcement of safety protocols to prevent further loss of life.
The senator commiserated with the families of the victims, expressing solidarity and offering assurance that the state government would provide support for the injured and those affected by the disaster.
Meanwhile, the State government has pledged to assist the families of the victims and to work with federal agencies to provide the necessary support for the injured.
