Anglican Bishop Advises Judges to Be Firm, Just

Ibadan, Oct. 7, 2024 (TheGavel) – The Bishop of Ibadan Anglican Diocese, Most Rev. Joseph Akinfenwa, has urged members of the judiciary to uphold fairness and firmness in the dispensation of justice.

Akinfenwa delivered this message during the 2024/2025 Legal Year Service for the Oyo State Judiciary, held at the Cathedral of St. James The Great in Ibadan on Monday. He emphasized the need for integrity, advising judges and lawyers never to use their positions to defraud or exploit the public.

The bishop called on the judiciary to handle civil, criminal, and other cases with the same urgency as political cases, noting that court proceedings directly affect the lives and destinies of individuals. He also advocated for the adoption of electronic recording in courtrooms to enhance efficiency and reduce unnecessary delays caused by frequent adjournments.

“The judiciary, as the last hope of the common man, must remain upright and avoid all forms of inducements,” Akinfenwa said. He encouraged legal professionals to seek wisdom and courage from God to always do what is right.

He further appealed to the Oyo State government to employ more judges and improve their welfare to ensure the quick and fair dispensation of justice, noting that adequate support could help judges avoid compromising their positions.

Gov. Seyi Makinde, represented by the Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Mr. Adebo Ogundoyin, pledged the government’s continued support for the judicial sector. He highlighted improvements such as the provision of 10 new vehicles for judges and a 300% salary increment.

Oyo State Chief Judge, Justice Iyabo Yerima, expressed optimism for the judiciary’s performance in the new legal year, revealing that new courts are under construction and the digitization of all courts will soon be completed. She also announced that the names of new judges have been submitted to the National Judicial Council for approval.

Akinfenwa concluded the service with prayers for the safety and success of judges and lawyers in their pursuit of justice.(NAN)
