Afolabi denies claims alleging Mercy Aigbe burnt house to promote movie
Nigerian actress Kemi Afolabi has condemned the online trolling directed at her colleague, Mercy Aigbe, following a devastating fire that engulfed her house in Lagos.
The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, caused extensive property damage amounting to millions of naira.
Aigbe shared a video showing the destruction, but some social media users accused her of staging the tragedy to promote her upcoming film, Thinline. Others resorted to personal attacks, referencing her marital status.
In a heartfelt Instagram video, Afolabi expressed dismay at the accusations and called for an end to the harassment. The 46-year-old actress emphasized the gravity of the situation and urged the public to show empathy instead of criticism.
“I am begging on behalf of Mercy… she did not send me, and I know she is always a strong woman. Please, any support you can give her at this time, stop trolling her. How can someone allow her house to burn to promote a movie?” Afolabi pleaded.
She highlighted the immense loss Aigbe has endured, including personal belongings, filming equipment, and the house itself, stressing the need for collective support during this difficult time.
“I know we are are human and nobody is perfect. We already discussed about the house. We have people who have told her they would support her. It is a big deal. If you want to think about everything that has burnt down including her properties, the house itself, the filming equipment.
“I cannot believe people are still trolling her. This is unfair. All she needs is you support. Forget whatever you guys might have against her. How can someone allow her house to burn to promote a movie,” she added.
