AFCON 2025Q: Spittler ‘proud’ of Rwanda’s victory over Super Eagles
Rwanda head coach, Thorsten Spittler was proud to see his team beat Nigeria’s Super Eagles away on Monday.
The Amavubi recorded one of the shocking results in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers by stunning their more illustrious opponent 2-1 in Uyo.
It was the East Africans first-ever victory over the three-time African champions.
Rwanda went behind in the 59th minute after Samuel Chukwueze dribbled past three players before firing past goalkeeper Fabrice Ntwari.
In a surprise twist, the visitors struck twice through Jimmy Mutsinzi and Innocent Nshuti.
“I’m happy because we came, we saw, we conquered. It’s almost seen as an impossibility for any team to beat the Super Eagles, with some of Africa’s best footballers, on their home soil,” Spittler told reporters after the game.
“Check the FIFA rankings! The Super Eagles are ranked around 30th, while we, Rwanda, are somewhere in the 160s. That’s a huge gap. Yet, we stood our ground and achieved this feat. It’s a big plus for us, and I’m proud of the players.”
