The Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has come under fire for allegedly misrepresenting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s remarks about Governor Alex Otti’s residence during a recent dinner with state governors.

Contrary to claims that the President “rebuked” Governor Otti for operating from his private residence in Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South LGA, a fact-check of Tinubu’s statement reveals that it was a lighthearted remark, not a reprimand.

During the event, President Tinubu acknowledged Governor Otti’s dedication and described him as a “very good friend and a Lagos boy too.” The President’s words were far from an attack, as he humorously mentioned the governor’s continued stay in his private residence while appreciating his governance efforts.

His exact statement read:

“It is a great joy giving thanks to God Almighty that we are here again this year. Share the breaking of bread and the little that we have together. I thank all of you for responding to the invitation. Not that you don’t have enough responsibility enough to share.

“Uh! I watch the news regularly. I see what is happening, observe what is happening, Kano what is happening, Abia what is happening… But I try to find time to glance through the newspapers… It is only Abia that I read that is still in his private residence. The austerity is not as bad… But he’s to fulfill his promise and you’re my very good friend, a Lagos boy too. I hope you enjoyed the evening…”

Nowhere in his speech did the President express “displeasure” or “demand” that Governor Otti relocate to Umuahia, as the PDP has falsely claimed.

Critics have pointed out the hypocrisy of the Abia PDP, which remained silent for years when former Governor Okezie Ikpeazu abandoned the Government House in Umuahia. Despite receiving billions in federal allocations, Ikpeazu failed to renovate or build a befitting State House, forcing his successor to operate from his private residence.

The structure the PDP now insists Governor Otti should use has been described as dilapidated and unfit for governance, largely due to the negligence of past administrations. Governor Otti, known for his commitment to transparency, has already commenced plans to construct a new, modern Government House to serve Abians effectively.

The Abia PDP’s alleged pattern of spreading misinformation has raised concerns about ethical and legal consequences. With the soon-to-be-activated Cybercrime Act in the state, authorities warn that individuals or groups found guilty of deliberately misleading the public through fake news may face prosecution.

Political analysts have urged the PDP to focus on addressing its 24 years of governance failures rather than attempting to discredit a government that has shown visible progress in key sectors.

Despite persistent propaganda from the opposition, Governor Otti has remained focused on his administration’s core objectives, including:

– Restoring transparency and accountability in governance.

– Constructing a befitting Government House for the state.

– Revamping Abia’s infrastructure, economy, and security.

Observers note that Abians are already witnessing a transformation under Otti’s leadership, making it difficult for misinformation to thrive.
