13 People Died In Edo Road Accidents
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) reported that at least 13 individuals lost their lives in road accidents in Edo State in November 2024.
The Sector Commander of the Corps, Cyril Mathew, confirmed the tragic incidents while addressing journalists in Benin City on Sunday.
He indicated that these accidents occurred throughout the state during this timeframe.
Mathew further noted that 1,524 drivers were apprehended for various traffic violations during the same period.
He also mentioned that 76 passengers sustained injuries, while 13 fatalities were recorded from 20 road crashes that took place across the state.
“Most of the crashes in the state were as a result of break failure, overspending, dangerous driving, use of phone route violation among others by drivers across the state.
“The 1,524 traffic offenders were arrested for driving without fire extinguisher, failure to install speed limiting device, tyre violation, seat belt violation, overloading, route violation, driving against traffic, use of phone while driving, among other offences.
“The offenders were arraigned in a mobile court and fined accordingly by the court for the various offences,” the FRSC official said.
Mathew, however, warned motorists against overspeeding, drinking while driving, night driving, and use of phones while driving, among other offences.
Barely two weeks ago, an automobile accident resulted in the deaths of at least 14 individuals near Tage Bridge in the Kafin Hausa Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
Naija News reports that the tragic incident took place on Monday when a passenger vehicle was involved in a crash, leading to significant fatalities.
Eyewitness accounts describe the scene as horrific, with numerous bodies dispersed across the area.
The state police command verified the occurrence on Monday through its Public Relations Officer, DSP Shi’isu Adam.
Adam indicated that the driver of the vehicle survived the incident and is currently cooperating with the police to determine the cause of the accident.
“The identities of the victims have not been released, pending notification of their families,” he said.
Adam stated that the incident took place when a Golf 3 Wagon, bearing the license plate GML 842 XA, was en route from Hadejia town to Makera village, at which point it overturned and fell into the river.
The police spokesperson disclosed that the vehicle’s driver emerged from the accident unscathed and is cooperating with the police during the investigation.
